2018 in Review

January 11, 2019

As we say goodbye to 2018, all of us at PRO Aurora want to thank you for your support this year and give you a snapshot of our accomplishments.

With your help in 2018:

-PRO’s Timothy Christopher Reece Scholarship Fund awarded $6844 of tuition, providing full and partial music scholarships to six students who wouldn’t have been able to otherwise afford it.

-We awarded the first annual Timothy Reece Memorial Scholarship to Josh Marsh, a student selected for his outstanding leadership and artistic skills.

-In July, we teamed up with School of Rock to host our first Rock the Lot community event. Rock the Lot provided a venue for young musicians and artists to sell and buy used instruments and art. School of Rock’s house band and staff band supplied the music, Kona Ice brought slushy treats, and our neighbor Jet’s Pizza generously donated the food. It’s an event we hope to grow in coming years.

-School of Rock’s house band traveled to and performed at Summerfest, the world’s largest music festival, in Milwaukee WI. PRO contributed $1000 toward additional performance time. As any house band member will tell you, playing this gig was a highlight of the year.

-Our VIP tables at School of Rock performances continued to be popular, as well as our poster and photo package sales, bringing in a net revenue of $4968.

-Our Instrument Loan Program continues to grow. This year we added a drum kit as well as a new ¾ guitar thanks to community donations and a grant from Guitar Center. We will publicize this program even more in 2019 and get instruments into the hands of students at no cost to them.

Looking forward to 2019, we aim to grow and serve more students. We are refining our mission and are in the process of creating a strategic plan to reach local kids in need. We will fill you in on details once they are finalized, but our goal is to partner with local schools to find students who would benefit from music lessons, playing on stage, and belonging to a supportive music community.

In terms of sustainability, we are working toward that as well. By expanding our programs, we hope to become more visible and demonstrate the impact that grants and individual donations can make.

We do all of this work while keeping in mind the memory of Tim Reece: artist, poet, musician, irreplaceable friend of PRO, and the person for whom our scholarship program is named. Tim knew the power of playing music--that it could foster friendship, enrich good times, and provide comfort in difficult times. As we see kids in music programs grow as people and musicians, we are reminded of the ways that music changes lives and improves the world around us.

All of this is made possible because of the generosity of our donors, particularly the Reece family and Mark Christiansen, who have donated with the goal of making our fund sustainable. We never take our donors' trust and support for granted. If you'd like to make your tax deductible donation, please visit https://www.proaurora.org/give.

We’ll leave you with the words of our some of our scholarship recipients:

“This means more than you know.” - parent

“We are...elated! Thank you! Thank you! You have our deepest gratitude!” - parent

“I've made so many friends and I've grown as a musician...School of Rock has made me so happy this past year and I can't thank you enough." - student

Thank you for being our partner in this work. See you in 2019!
